That may come, but that is a different sort of activity. It takes too much time and I am not yet preparing professional shots for sale or display. Now, I am sure that you can use layers in Photoshop, or some such, to recover highlights for a final image, too, but I honestly am not into that yet. (You can use this approach at any point, if you have problem with all or any single colour, or luminance.) I put three points at the top right and pull the curve down a bit via the centre point, so a very local change to the curve. I also use the tone curve to change brightness in the highlights sometimes. If there is a straight horizon, you can also, or instead, use the partial correction tool to darken the sky and play around, but there is no gamma, so you can't change the balance between light and dark, so I go for the first approach initially, if highlight recovery is the key issue if not, then partial correction allows me to put some mood in the sky. This will bring back highlights in a sky shot, for example, so reveal more blue where it might have been white. Increase chroma/decrease luminance and up the dynamic range, again to taste. After that, pop up the highlight controller tool.

Slight bugs and untidiness are still there and the odd missing feature (for instance no full screen preview and only basic printing) but it seems stable and has a superb combination of good natural rendering quality with outstanding yet simple to use non-destructive layers as well as a "real" layer option for collages etc which saves in PS format while LR makes do with their annoying pins system. All packages have strengths and weaknesses but I'm increasingly finding that ON1 2018 might be the best bet overall and I'm curious if you could be more specific on the "turning images black" comment as I don't think I've seen anything like that. The weakness in highlight recovery plus a tendency to desaturate shadows make it hard to recommend perhaps as a first choice these days at the moderately high price but I do share much of your enthusiasm.Īfter the announcement of LR going subscription only, like many I'm now considering my options.
I agree that the results are generally pleasantly smooth-looking yet detailed and certain images are given a very distinctive tonal palette when using the Fuji film simulations hard to replicate elsewhere.

it's important to distinguish between the full package and the free bundled software which is based on the ancient version 4 and is missing critical features such as the HDR slider. I always encourage people who are not entirely happy with their current software to give SP pro a bash. Do you have a specific camera which is not supported by v7? Otherwise, I'm not sure there's much in the way of new features when I last looked.

Personally, I didn't find any reason to upgrade to 8. I suggest you contact them on, as they have been responsive in the past, to see what's up. I went through the upgrade procedure and confirm that Avangate will not add the product to the basket.
